Police and fire radios still have dead spots on Lansing (MI) southwest side

Two of Lansing's at-large City Council members--Carol Woods and Brian Jeffries--gave a status report about police and fire radio dead spots on the southwest side including the Averill Woods neighborhood.

Their report follows media reports where Lansing Police Department officers and local firefighters shared experiences where their radios would not work during emergencies on the southwest side.

Last night both council members shared background about the emergency communication problems and told about what's being done to fix them.

  • The emergency communication system used by city police and by firefighters is part of a larger county-wide system to enable departments in other governmental units to communicate with each other.
  • Plans are moving ahead to construct a radio tower to help with the radio signal dead zones.
  • City radio technicians and information technology staffers have been working hard to correct deficiencies in the county system that affect emergency radio communication in the city.
  • The radio problems exist in other parts of the city including the northside.

That is an accurate and reasonable synopsis of the situation. Good job Carol & Brian.
